![]() ![]() This also gives a hint to the actual manufacturer of the pump – with the model number HB-630A. Here’s an overall view of the power control board, with a better view of the pressure sensor & relay. Power is handled by a small linear regulator at the bottom edge of the board, with a couple of large electrolytics for filtering. ![]() The pressure sensor is on the right, although I haven’t been able to decode the laser-etched number on the top. The microcontroller is an Atmel ATTINY24A with 2K of onboard flash. I’m not going to take this one off, as zebra strips don’t usually work properly once removed. Underneath hides the LCD controller itself. The display is a standard 7-segment LCD, with a zebra strip connection to the PCB. ![]() The power control board has a 10A relay to switch power to the motor, along with a small microcontroller & pressure sensor, which is under the plastic adaptor on the PCB. The electronics are on a pair of PCBs tucked into the upper cover, one dealing with the pressure measurement, microcontroller & power control, and the other dealing with the display & buttons. The 20 minute limit on operating time most likely has a lot to do with the almost entirely plastic construction – the adiabatic heating of the air as it’s compressed will make short work of the relatively low melting point of the Nylon. Plenty of grease has been applied to the moving parts at least, to help keep the friction down. The working cylinder & piston are also made of plastic, so I don’t hold up much hope of this unit wearing well, even though the plastic feels like Nylon 66, glass fibre reinforced. Ball bearings are used on the crank gear, but it appears that the big end bearing is a simple bushing on the steel pin. The driven gear is made of plastic, most likely nylon. CrankshaftĪfter the cover has been removed from the pump unit, the main drive is visible. This motor does have some cooling from a fan on the armature. The drive motor has the same model number as the overall pump, likely made specifically for this unit. The outlet valve is hidden inside the tube. The valves are located on the end of the cylinder, the right hand on is the intake valve, the right is an pressure relief valve. The internal parts of this pump are almost entirely made of plastic – not what I’d expect for an air compressor. I expected this to be a centrifugal blower, but instead it’s a large reciprocating air compressor – even if the construction quality is a little dubious for a device that costs over £70. Here’s another piece of tech, the electric air pump that’s available as an optional extra with Airbeam tents. ![]() ![]()

Her performance was the definitive film portrayal until Audrey Hepburn played the role in the highly successful 1964 film musical My Fair Lady. The unprecedented use of the word "bloody" – as a scripted intensive – caused a sensation when Campbell delivered it.įor the 1938 film Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw personally requested that the young English actress Wendy Hiller play Doolittle, a part she had previously played on stage opposite Leslie Howard as Higgins. Shaw had written the role for her, and although many considered her too old for the role, she triumphed. The part of Eliza was originally played by Mrs Patrick Campbell, at that time the most famous actress on London's West End stage. The character of Eliza Doolittle was likely inspired by the real story of Eliza Sheffield (1856–1942), a barmaid in London who rose through the ranks of society in the late 19th century through marriage, various relationships, and forgeries. The outcome of these attentions varies between the original play and the various adaptations (see the Pygmalion article). ĭoolittle receives voice coaching and learns the rules of etiquette. Who really invented calculus - BBC Science Focus Magazine Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz are the chief contenders for this textbook troubling mathematical tool, but maybe we should be looking further back to find the real answer. (For more about Isaac Newton click here and I share a little more about both men here.)īut I digress onto a bit of mathematics history and am letting my geek side show. Each mathematician claimed the other stole his ideas, but it is believed that both actually discovered the same thing separately around the same time. Do you have any idea how bored you have to be to invent calculus?" Now the truth is Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a German mathematician, published the same discoveries around the exact same time as Isaac Newton. ![]() ![]() Subscribe to BBC Focus magazine for fascinating new Q&As every month and follow on Twitter for your daily dose of fun science facts.I saw a meme on Facebook that says: " Think you're bored? When Sir Isaac Newton invented calculus it was during the plague. Calculus makes it possible to solve problems as diverse as tracking the position of a space shuttle or predicting the pressure building up behind a dam as the water rises. However, none of Leibniz and Newton’s predecessors realised the full power of what they were working on. Calculus is now the basic entry point for anyone wishing to study physics, chemistry, biology, economics, finance, or actuarial science. This is a trick exploited in integral calculus to work out the total effect of a series of tiny changes. For example, Archimedes showed how to work out the area enclosed by curves by dividing it up into tiny strips. It’s now known that some basic ideas in calculus had been explored much earlier. Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz independently developed the theory of infinitesimal calculus in the later 17th century. Newton launched an unjustified campaign of character assassination against Leibniz, yet could not stop the adoption of his rival’s name for the technique (from the Latin for ‘counting stone’). Calculus, known in its early history as infinitesimal calculus, is a mathematical discipline focused on limits, continuity, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. Having invented it in secret in the 1660s, he was horrified when Leibniz went public with similar methods, having independently discovered them about 10 years later. As such, a better name for it would be ‘fluxions’ – a term coined by Isaac Newton, one of the two 17th-Century mathematicians regarded as its inventors, the other being the German Gottfried Leibniz. Learn more about the history of memes in this article. The term ‘meme’ (from the Greek ‘mimema,’ meaning ‘imitated’) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene. The 'Kerala school,' a little-known group of scholars and mathematicians in fourteenth century India, identified the 'infinite series' one of the basic components of calculus around 1350. Calculus is a powerful mathematical toolbox for dealing with phenomena in a state of flux, from the flow of water to the expansion of the cosmos.
